Positive Attitude Helps Heart Patients Heart disease patients who have a positive outlook tend to live longer than their more pessimistic counterparts. Information was collected on 600 coronary artery disease patients with a follow-up five years later. The death rate for the people with the most positive attitudes was 42% lower than for those people who had a more negative attitude. This difference in mortality, however, was not as great between the optimists and the pessimists when both groups exercised. Experts say the focus in cardiac rehabilitation should include helping patients have a more positive attitude and getting them exercising regularly.
