Possibly a Bots comment and, a fabulous response. Peddoc4healthyteeth • 10 hours ago As a pediatrician who cares for young children, I see dental decay on a daily basis and know the power of fluoride to prevent such problems. It makes me particularly sad to see a health professional propagating misinformation about fluoride that is all too commonly found on the internet. Sadly, organizations like FAN make themselves sound as if they are passing on scientific information when in reality, they twist results of scientific studies to mislead the public. *It is important to know what fluoride is and is not. Fluoride is a naturally occurring nutrient that is found in all bodies of water and in all of our diets. It has been around since the dawn of time. *Some communities water supplies already contain enough fluoride to prevent many cavities in the population, while other communities need a miniscule amount more of fluoride added to the water to provide the decay preventing benefit. *We first learned about the importance of fluoride in the 1920s when folks living in some cities with fluoride already naturally present in the water had many fewer cavities than the rest of the nation. This was a big deal back then because toothaches and tooth loss and dentures were so common. *With widespread community water fluoridation, the oral health of the US population has improved dramatically. Yes, people still get dental decay but the severity and degree are substantially reduced, thanks to community water fluoridation. *Community water fluoridation is NOT a conspiracy or a way to dispose of toxic waste or mass medication or a neurotoxin. It is NOT taking away anyones right or malpractice. It doesnt cause cancer or lower your IQ. These are all things that opponents to water fluoridation want you to believe but it is all just misinformation meant to scare and mislead you. *Community water fluoridation does one thing...it prevents dental decay and it does so in individuals of all ages, from young babies to senior citizens. Community water fluoridation is safe and effective and supported by a huge body of high quality research studies. DrWillEvans - Peddoc4healthyteeth • 7 hours ago As a doctor I have to say that your comment shows you are only a puppet cutting and pasting ADA talking points and not someone capable of doing independent research. You really should tell us all your name, maybe Dr. Chapman from Dartmouth Hitchcock(?), so we can all keep our children away from you. I have seen children from all over NH and there is absolutely no way to tell if they live in a fluoridated community or not. Ive seen many children from Manchester, Concord, and Lebanon with much more tooth decay than children who live on well water with almost zero fluoride (less then 0.1ppm). The only thing dental decay indicates for me is generally family income, diet, and hygiene. I have 30 year old patients who have lived on well water their entire lives who have never had a cavity, and Ive had 30 year old patients who have lived in fluoridated Concord, and at one time received fluoride tablets who have plenty of dental decay...as well as unsightly fluorosis as a result of overexposure to fluoride. So your anecdotal bullshit about seeing more dental decay in unfluoridated communities is meaningless. I question whether you are even a medical practitioner when I read your first bullet point. Calcium fluoride may be natural, but fluorosilicic acid and industrial grade sodium fluoride are NOT natural, they are inorganic industrial waste byproducts. Moreover, what is natural in Bennington is a fluoride level in the water of 0.2ppm or less. What is UNNATURAL is increasing the natural level by 400% to 0.8ppm, which extremists like yourself consider optimal. Also, you call fluoride a nutrient. If you really are a health professional then you know that it is impossible to be fluoride deficient, and that no health organization on earth classifies fluoride as a nutrient. Fluoride is not in any natural human metabolic pathway, and is not necessary for human growth or development. You say that some communities already have the optimal amount of fluoride while others need a minuscule amount more. I wouldnt call a 400+% increase minuscule. Also, those communities with high levels of fluoride (greater than 0.5ppm) are very, very rare and account for less than 5% of public water supplies in the U.S. According to World Health Organization data, dental decay has reduced the same, if not more, in countries that have never practiced fluoridation. Dental decay was also going down at the same rate prior to fluoridation ever being discovered. There are many, many other health factors that have contributed to an overall reduction in dental decay. Learn the difference between causation and correlation. You would fail a statistics 101 class using your logic. I agree that it is not a conspiracy, who said it was? All I hear from opponents are valid scientific and ethic arguments against the practice. You say it isnt toxic waste, but in fact it is. Fluorisilicic acid (HFSA), is classified by the EPA as a toxic waste byproduct of the phosphate fertilizer industry. Are you saying the EPA is lying? The EPA also classifies fluoride as a bioaccumulative developmental neurotoxicant. Get your facts straight champ. Fluoride is certainly toxic. Did you fail chemistry? Its one thing to question its toxicity at certain doses, but to claim it isnt a toxin is pure ignorance. You claim it isnt malpractice, but I know that by law you couldnt prescribe a person fluoride supplements without first establishing a patient-physician relationship; something you cant do with fluoridation. You also would be sued for malpractice if you handed out bottles of fluoride tablets and told patients to take as much as they wanted regardless of age, medical history, and overall exposure to fluoride from all sources. So if its malpractice if you do it within your office, why isnt it malpractice when you recommend doing it using our water supply? I highly doubt youre a real doctor. Stop posting the ADA talking points and start thinking with your head outside of your ass. benningtonbanner/columnists/ci_27262767/op-ed-water-fluoridation-is-medical-malpractice
