Post dawn visit to Danau Tok Uban near Rong Chenok, Pasir Mas yesterday. This mystical lake is one of the best kept secrets not only in Kelantan but arguably in Malaysia. Access was via a series of narrow, deserted country lanes traversing ricefields, rubber smallholdings and dusuns. A majestic, albeit not well maintained, white mosque dominates a corner of the huge lake. The stunning edifice was fully-funded by the Sultan of Brunei and completed in January 1992. Why? And why there? It depends on who you asked. From the spiritual to the esoteric, theories abound on the Sultans motivation to build a beautiful mosque literally in the middle of nowhere. Im not into conjectures and wont dwell on matters of metaphysical spirituality. So well leave the questions at that. Having said that, this eerily silent, deep misty lake with persistent tales of an ancient inundated kingdom never failed to kindle my inner senses and tantalise my thoughts as it infused in me a profound sense of complete, peaceful contentment. .
