Post-election poll funded by USAID and DFID and carried out by US based Democracy International (DI) shows Awami League would have won the January 5 elections with at least a 5.8% margin even if BNP-Jamaat had participated. The poll surveyed 2544 citizens nationwide between January 11 to January 15 and was conducted independently of any political party. 42.7% said they would have voted for AL and another 0.1% for our Mohajote alliance while 35.1% said they would have voted for BNP, another 1.6% for Jamaat-e-Islami and 0.3% for their 4 party alliance. bdnews24/politics/2014/02/02/al-would-have-won-inclusive-polls-survey This is in contradiction to all polls conducted prior to the elections except for two; on December 3 I had posted on my Facebook page the correctly weighted results of a poll conducted jointly by AL and DI which showed AL at 39.6% and BNP at 34.2%. The AL’s own large sample poll conducted in November, which we never publicized, showed AL at 38%, BNP at 36%. The official Election Commission number is 39.8%. Another 10.3% refused to reveal who they would have voted for and 5.1% were still undecided, but the data uncovers another significant indicator. Among respondents from the 147 constituencies where voting was held 12% said they wanted to vote but did not because they felt unsafe. This was due to the violence caused by BNP-Jamaat on election day where they attacked election officials and burnt down several hundred polling centers. This means that despite the BNP-Jamaat’s boycott, if they themselves had not caused violence voter turnout would have been about 52%. This additional 12% vote would not be for the BNP-Jamaat as they were not participating. Only 4.4% of total respondents in this poll said they would have voted for Jatiya Party and/or other parties and independents. 4.4% of the 12% who would have voted is just 0.5%. Most of the remaining 11.5% of the vote would have gone to the Awami League. The clear conclusion from this poll is that the Awami League would have received somewhere between 42.7% to 54.2% of the total vote in this election, regardless of BNP-Jamaat’s participation. I would like to draw attention to two particular groups who made wildly incorrect statements about these elections. A few western embassies and several media outlets claimed voter turnout was either as low as 20% or as high as 30% at the most. They did so without conducting any actual survey or count whatsoever and based simply on guesswork and rumors. Even more disturbing, without evidence a few members of these groups claimed that the voter turnout figure was inflated by the Election Commission and/or ballot stuffing by Awami League activists. This poll conducted randomly and independently by a US organization and paid for by the US and British governments matches the Election Commission’s voter turnout number almost exactly. These western diplomats and the media that made these false accusations owe the Election Commission, the Awami League and the people of Bangladesh an apology. Since they were so quick to issue incorrect public statements on the voter turnout they should at least have the decency to issue statements that their previous claims were wrong. Otherwise, it would indicate they deliberately wished to discredit our elections. Another issue I would like to draw your attention to are the polls conducted prior to the elections by various groups, mostly Bangladesh media. In particular I want to call out the polls conducted by the two largest newspapers in Bangladesh, Prothom Alo and Daily Star. Both of their polls showed the BNP receiving 50-55% of the vote and the AL receiving just between 25-30%. These polls were not just a little inaccurate; they were wildly off the mark. They also disregard a few simple historical facts. The AL has always received more than 30% of the vote while the BNP has never received more than 40%. In fact the only party that has ever received more than 40% is the AL. No party has ever received 50% of the vote but the AL has come the closest at 49% in the 2008 elections. These facts alone should have indicated that their polls could not be accurate. The Prothom Alo and Daily Star polls clearly have no clue on how to conduct polling. Either that, or they deliberately skewed their polls as they were repeatedly demanding these elections not be held. As polls affect public opinion, which has a direct influence on elections and indeed democracy, this should be investigated. ইউএসএইড ও ডিএফআইডি-এর অর্থায়নে, যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ভিত্তিক ডেমোক্রেসি ইন্টারন্যাশনাল(ডিআই ) কর্তৃক পরিচালিত নির্বাচন পরবর্তী জরিপে দেখা গেছে, ৫ জানুয়ারির নির্বাচনে বিএনপি-জামাত অংশ নিলেও কমপক্ষে ৫.৮% ব্যবধানে আওয়ামী লীগ জয়ী হতো। ১১ থেকে ১৫ জানুয়ারির ভেতরে রাজনৈতিক দল নির্বিশেষে সারা দেশের ২৫৪৪ জন নাগরিকের উপরে এ জরিপ চালানো হয়। ৪২.৭% বলেছেন, তারা আওয়ামীলীগকে ভোট দিতেন এবং আরো ০.১% ভোট দিতেন আমাদের মহাজোটকে। অন্যদিকে ৩৫.১% বলেছেন, তারা বিএনপিকে ভোট দিতেন, ১.৬% জামাতে ইসলামকে এবং ০.৩% চার দলীয় জোটকে। bangla.bdnews24/politics/article738533.bdnews নির্বাচনের আগে পরিচালিত সকল জরিপ এই জরিপটির সাথে সাংঘর্ষিক, কেবল দুটি ছাড়া; ৩ ডিসেম্বর আওয়ামী লীগ ও ডিআই এর যৌথ উদ্যোগে সঠিকভাবে পরিচালিত একটি জরিপের কথা আমি আমার ফেসবুক পেজে পোস্ট করেছিলাম, যেখানে আওয়ামী লীগের পক্ষে ৩৯.৬% এবং বিএনপির পক্ষে ৩৪.২% মতামত পাওয়া গিয়েছিল। নভেম্বরে আওয়ামী লীগের নিজস্ব উদ্যোগে পরিচালিত নমুনা জরিপে দেখা যায়, আওয়ামীলীগের পক্ষে মতামত এসেছে ৩৮% এবং বিএনপির পক্ষে ৩৬%। এই জরিপটির ফলাফল আমরা প্রচার করিনি। https://facebook/sajeeb.a.wazed/posts/379208475548915 যে ১৪৭টি আসনে ভোট গৃহীত হয়েছে সেখানকার ৪০.৭% ভোটার উপস্থিতির সত্যতা এই একই জরিপ থেকেই প্রমাণিত হয়। নির্বাচন কমিশনের অফিসিয়াল হিসাবে এটা ৩৯.৮%। জরিপে ১০.৩% অংশগ্রহণকারী কাকে ভোট দিতেন তা গোপন রাখতে চেয়েছেন এবং ৫.১% তখনও সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণ করেননি। তবে এই উপাত্ত থেকেই আরো একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় বেরিয়ে আসে। যে ১৪৭ টি আসনে নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে, সেখানকার ভোটারদের ১২% জানিয়েছেন, তারা ভোট দিতে চেয়েছিলেন কিন্তু নিরাপত্তার অভাব বোধ করায় দিতে পারেননি। নির্বাচনের দিনে বিএনপি-জামায়াতের সন্ত্রাস, নির্বাচনী কর্মকর্তাদের উপরে আক্রমণ এবং কয়েক শত ভোট কেন্দ্র জ্বালিয়ে দেয়ার কারণেই এমনটি ঘটেছে। এর মানে, যদি বিএনপি-জামাত সন্ত্রাসী কর্মকাণ্ড না চালাতো তাহলে তাদের নির্বাচন বর্জন সত্ত্বেও ৫২% ভোট গৃহীত হতো। এই অতিরিক্ত ১২% ভোট বিএনপি-জামাতের নয়, কেননা তারা নির্বাচনে অংশ নেয়নি। জরিপে মাত্র ৪.৪% জানিয়েছেন তারা জাতীয় পার্টি, অন্যান্য দল ও স্বতন্ত্র প্রার্থীদের ভোট দিতেন। ১২% এর ৪.৪% মানে মাত্র ০.৫%। বাকি ১১.৫% বেশীরভাগ ভোটই আওয়ামীলীগের ঘরেই জমা পড়তো। এই জরিপ থেকে পরিষ্কারভাবেই সিদ্ধান্তে আসা যায় যে, বিএনপি-জামাত নির্বাচনে আসুক বা না আসুক, আওয়ামীলীগ মোট ভোটের ৪২.৭% থেকে ৫৪.২% ভোট পেত। আমি বিশেষ ভাবে দুটি মহলের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করতে চাই, যারা এই নির্বাচন সম্পর্কে ভয়াবহ ধরণের অসত্য বক্তব্য দিয়েছেন। কিছু পশ্চিমা দূতাবাস ও কয়েকটি গণমাধ্যম দাবি করেছে, ভোটার উপস্থিতি সর্বনিম্ন ২০% এবং সর্বোচ্চ ৩০% বড়জোর। কোন রকম গণনা ছাড়াই গুজব এবং অনুমানের উপর ভিত্তি করে তারা এ দাবি করেছে। এমনকী আরো দৃষ্টিকটু ভাবে, কোন প্রমাণ ছাড়াই এই মহলগুলোর কেউ কেউ দাবী করেছেন, নির্বাচন কমিশন ভোটার উপস্থিতি বাড়িয়ে দেখিয়েছে, আওয়ামীলীগের কর্মীরা জাল ভোট দিয়েছেন। যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও যুক্তরাজ্য সরকারের অর্থায়নে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ভিত্তিক সংস্থা কর্তৃক সম্পূর্ণ স্বাধীনভাবে, দ্বৈবচয়ন পদ্ধতিতে পরিচালিত এই জরিপটিই নিখুঁত ভাবে নির্বাচন কমিশনের ভোটার উপস্থিতির হিসাবকে সমর্থন করে। যেসব পশ্চিমা কূটনীতিক এবং গণমাধ্যম এই মিথ্যা অভিযোগ গুলো তুলেছেন তাদের উচিৎ নির্বাচন কমিশন, আওয়ামীলীগ এবং দেশের জনগণের কাছে ক্ষমা চাওয়া। ভুল এবং অসত্য বক্তব্যগুলো তারা খুব দ্রুততার সাথেই দিয়েছিলেন, কাজেই আগের সেই বক্তব্য গুলো যে ভুল ছিল সেটা স্বীকার করে নেয়ার ভদ্রতাটুকু অন্তত তাদের থাকা উচিৎ। অন্যথায় এটাই প্রমাণিত হবে যে তারা পরিকল্পিত ভাবেই আমাদের নির্বাচনকে কালিমালিপ্ত করতে চেয়েছিলেন। আরেকটি বিষয়ে আমি আপনাদের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করতে চাই, সেটা হলো নির্বাচনের আগে বিভিন্ন সংস্থা বিশেষ করে গণমাধ্যম কর্তৃক পরিচালিত জরিপগুলো। বিশেষ করে আমি বাংলাদেশের দুটি শীর্ষস্থানীয় পত্রিকার জরিপের কথা উল্লেখ করতে চাই, প্রথম আলো ও ডেইলি স্টার। দুটি পত্রিকার জরিপেই দেখা গেছে বিএনপি ৫০-৫৫% ভোট পাবে এবং আওয়ামীলীগ পাবে ২৫-৩০% ভোট। জরিপগুলো যে শুধু সামান্য ত্রুটিযুক্ত ছিল তা বলা যাবে না, এগুলো ছিল মারাত্মক ধরণের ভুল। কিছু ঐতিহাসিক সত্যকেও তারা উপেক্ষা করেছে। আওয়ামীলীগ সবসময়ই ৩০% এর বেশী ভোট পেয়ে এসেছে, পক্ষান্তরে বিএনপি কখনোই ৪০% এর বেশী ভোট পায়নি। আসলে আওয়ামীলীগই একমাত্র দল যারা ৪০% এর বেশী ভোট পেয়েছে। কোন দলই এখন পর্যন্ত ৫০% ভোট পায়নি, কিন্তু ২০০৮ সালের নির্বাচনে আওয়ামীলীগ প্রায় ৪৯% ভোট পেয়েছে। শুধু মাত্র এই বিষয়গুলোই দেখিয়ে দেয়, তাদের জরিপগুলো সঠিক হতে পারে না। বস্তুত, প্রথম আলো এবং ডেইলি স্টারের জরিপকারীদের কোন ধারণাই নেই কীভাবে জরিপ চালাতে হয়। অথবা, তারা পরিকল্পিত ভাবেই জরিপের ফলাফল ঘুরিয়ে দিতে চেয়েছে, কারণ তারা বারবারই নির্বাচন বন্ধ করার দাবী জানিয়েছে। এধরণের জরিপগুলো জনমনে প্রভাব ফেলে, যারা প্রভাব সরাসরি নির্বাচন এবং অবশ্যই গণতন্ত্রের উপর পড়ে, কাজেই এই ঘটনার তদন্ত হওয়া উচিৎ।
