Post for today: My pre-writing exercise ritual. Admit it. As fiction writers, many of us sit on our arse a lot. We may forget to step outside (let alone outside of our writing covey) for days--dare I say weeks. You dont need me to tell you that this is unhealthy. However, exercise comes with other benefits to the writer, including increased blood flow to the brain and the release of hormones that get our creative juices flowing. Having trouble putting words on a page? Go for a walk. Stretch. My daily routine is not as vigorous as some of my fellow novelists, but it works and helps with my worn out back, knees, ankles and wrists. During the week, I do some form of a workout that combines yoga stretches and isometrics. Combined, they result in a no or low impact cardio workout as well. For the last year and a half, I have been using the DDP Yoga work out. I highly recommend it. Search it online to find out more. On the weekend and when I am under the weather, I do some basic stretches and finish with a short meditation. I high recommend putting together at least a stretching routine that works for you and doing it every day. It can be as effective as any writing exercise for increasing or maintaining production. :-)
