I believe Jesus actually healed people as described in the Gospels (and still can today), but I also believe those miracles werent merely for the benefit of those directly affected; they also symbolize something greater. Let me give you an example: When Jesus disciples asked why a particular man was born blind, He said it happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. (John 9:2). Then, after healing the man, He said, For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind. (John 9:39). So, the blind man really was healed, and I believe Jesus delighted in healing him, but He also heals us of spiritual blindness -- He opens our eyes to see things Gods way. Jesus healed deaf people, and He opens our ears to hear Gods voice. He healed mute people, and He opens our mouths to speak Gods truth. He healed the lame, and He enables us to walk in Gods ways. He cleansed the skin of lepers who sought Him then, and He cleanses the sins of all who seek Him now. He healed the sick, and the Bible says the heart of man is desperately sick. (Jeremiah 17:9), but He is able to create in us a clean heart (Psalm 51:10), even a new heart (Ezekiel 36:26). Jesus healed paralyzed people, too, and He frees us from being paralyzed by fear and sin so we can go into all the world and make disciples of all the nations. (Matthew 28:19). Most importantly, He raised people from the dead, and He raised us up even while we were dead in our sins (Ephesians 2:5, Colossians 2:13). So the next time you read the Gospels, remember: its more than a healing.
