Postcard from Hangzhou, China: Why China WILL become the worlds biggest economy faster than you would think. Today the penny finally dropped for me as it got under my skin how crazy enormous China is and how big the economy is going to be sooner than we know. We did a visit in a so called tier 2 city of China. Our destination was Hangzhou, 180 km southwest of Shanghai. After the pleasent train ride which took only an hour in a shiny train between shiny new train stations of the size of big international airports we arrived to the city I had never ever heard of. Now listen carefully - Hangzhou is NOT even on the list of the 10 biggest cities of China, BUT it has more than 6,5 mio citizens! at would make it the 4th biggest city in Europe following Istanbul, Moscow and London. When we saw the first Gucci and Prada stores from our bus we were all surprised. But for the next 6 hours we walked from one mall and department store to the next featuring nothing BUT international luxury goods. AND the traffic for a Tuesday morning and afternoon was mindblowing and people were bringing home filled shopping bags from all of these stores. You can run, but you can hide. Countries and companies NEED to understand how to win the heart and win together with the Chinese people.
