Posted On 16 Sep, 2013 - By lostbhoys - With 0 Comments We have played Hearts and now its the big one—A C Milan away and then Barcelona at home. I was kidding on before the draw that I hoped we wouldn’t get Barcelona again because we were sick of beating them. The truth is by the time we meet Ajax I think it will be a straight punch-out, two games, back to back for a Europa league spot and I’d take it now. But then again I’m a Celtic supporter and the truth has nothing to do with it. I used to think that film with Charlton Heston The Ten Commandments which I first watched with all the other kids in The ABC minors was a documentary about our Da. I daren’t look at his face. His bushy eyebrows used to shift upwards, higher than Mount Ararat to show disproval at something I’d done or said. And they used to shift lower also to show disapproval at something I’d done or said. He, of course, had more than Ten Commandments. Our Da didn’t talk to us much but when he did it was usually to make a pronouncement about Celtic. The games that mattered were against Rangers, but the games that really mattered –since we won the league every year—were the big European nights. Billy Bremner’s Leeds team and my Da telling me we’d beat them, even though the papers said they were the best team in England, the world, the universe and the Solar System strikes a particular cord. Sometimes we’ve got to believe in the unbelievable. It’s a seasonal thing. The rhythm of our day changes as the match approaches. We start looking for signs. Balotteli says there’s no reason why Celtic and A C Milan can’t make the groups stages. Boerringter says Ajax have sold all their best players and are much weaker. Messi says Celtic has the best supporters in the world and they can’t take anything for granted. Lennon says our defence is solid. If my Da was looking down would his eyebrows go up or down? The truth is it’s all about money and the gap between richer and poorer gets bigger and bigger. David beat Goliath, but somebody didn’t tap him on the shoulder and say: ‘There’s somebody at the door called Goliath that wants to have a word with you!’ The truth is I don’t care about the truth. I pray for a clean sheet, a goal, a point. I pray for Samaras to be a no messing Messi. I pray for Brown to be our Inestia. I pray for Forest to be the player Lennon keeps telling us he is. My heart tells me what my head cannot. Eyebrows up or down? I’m not really sure. I’ll wait and see. HH Jack.
