Posted by Mark Langfords Weather Page (facebook): Just in from our San Antonio-Austin NOAA office: ..HEADLINE...Arctic Airmass heads toward Texas...possible frozen precipitation mid week... ...AREA OF CONCERN... Cold Arctic Air - All of South Central Texas. Chances of Frozen Precipitation Mid Week - Mainly along and north of a line from Comstock to Boerne to Liberty Hill. Rest of South Central Texas needs to monitor the forecast closely as this forecast impact area could change. . ...IMPACTS... Cold Arctic Air - Temperatures will be well below normal with high temperatures only in the 30s and 40s. Freezing temperatures possible midweek. Protection for Pipes, Plants, Pets. Frozen Precipitation - Light icing on elevated surfaces. Travel may be impacted especially out in the Hill Country and northern areas where temperatures will likely be coldest. ...TIMING... Arctic air will arrive early Tuesday and remain in South Central Texas at least through Thursday. Slight chance of overrunning light precipitation will occur Tue Night. Increasing rain/frozen precipitation chances will occur Wed Night into Thursday (including New Years Day). Best chances will be during the late night and early morning hours when temps are the coldest. ...CONFIDENCE... Arctic Air (High)...Frozen Precipitation amounts and area (Low) ...DISCUSSION... Arctic air is building in northwest Canada on this Sunday. The cold air that is in place today across the area will modify somewhat on Monday before the arctic airmass spills into the Southern Plains late Monday night into our area on Tuesday. We will start to see the effects of the arctic push on Tuesday as temperatures fall and the arctic air stays in place through at least Thursday. High temperatures will likely stay in the 30s and 40s midweek...and if the arctic air is colder than advertised, which is often the case, some areas to the west and north may struggle to make it above freezing especially if it stays cloudy. At the same time, an upper level storm system will move into the western U.S. Tue and Wed, and create overrunning clouds and possible light precipitation for us starting Tue Night. Disturbances in the upper flow may cause some enhanced areas of precipitation during mid week, but exact timing is not known. Better chances of precipitation will occur Thu and Fri as the upper storm system crosses the desert SW and then into Texas on Friday. So an arctic airmass will be in place at the same time precipitation chances increase Tue Night through Thursday. What that means is that portions of South Central Texas will have a forecast that will have some chances of frozen precipitation in it, mainly in the form of freezing rain/drizzle. We are still several days out from this possible winter event so trying to nail down the time and area of greatest impact is very difficult. All residents need to monitor the forecast closely this upcoming week for possible winter weather advisories/watches/warnings. There may be travel impacts especially on New Years Eve night going into New Years Day. We will get you a daily update on this forecast event.
