(Posted by Ryan) Greetings friends and family! I hope this update finds everyone is doing well and enjoying the new year. The hectic schedule has continued in Carroll. Overall mom has remained in good spirits while enjoying Christmas and a quiet yet happy new year. Megan, the girls, and I continue to see mom on an almost daily basis to the point where she has even told me that we had better get going or that she has places to go and cant hang around long. Sometimes, I can’t help but laugh when she tells me she has things to do and needs to get busy. However, she has never been one to sit still, and that part of her personality is certainly intact. As we continue to watch mom and notice the little things that mom is doing or changes in her behavior, it continues to confirm the changes we had to make in how we “rate her days”. The most frequent question that we get as a family is how is your mom doing? This can certainly become a complex question to answer, especially for someone who thinks as simplistically as I do. The easiest way to gauge how she is doing to pay attention to how happy she is on a given day, and put aside what she says or does at times. If we stop for happy hour, have a drink while sitting in the sunny part of the room, go for a walk through the building, and are able to laugh and smile then it is truly a good day. Mom has remained busy doing every activity offered every day, and somehow makes the ladies working at Sunny Brook do few activities that are not on the schedule. Mom is often tries to help get meals ready, fold towels, and frequently takes the staff on walks they didn’t intend on taking. When mom is down, it is pretty simple to pick her back up. My best tactic is a compliment about her smile and she will typically say thank you, tell us she loves us, and go back about her business. Overall, things are going very well at Sunny Brook. We had been concerned about the winter months and how not getting out as much would impact her mood. Thankfully she has done quite well, and has been happy keeping busy while hanging out at Sunny Brook. Thank you for the calls, comments, and kind thoughts. Best wishes to everyone. - Ryan
