Poster Contest HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Cabell County students have a chance to showcase their artistic talents for the Above the Influence campaign. The Cabell County Substance Abuse Prevention Partnership (CCSAPP) and the Marshall University School of Pharmacy are hosting a poster contest in Cabell County Schools. The contest is open to all middle and high school students and fifth-grade students in the elementary schools. The contest will showcase the Above the Influence campaign, with participating students exhibiting how they remain Above the Influence. The poster contest runs until Monday, Oct. 7. Winners will be announced on Thursday, Oct. 10. All entries will be displayed at the Huntington Mall from Oct. 15 through Oct. 25. “Influence is powerful, whether is positive or negative,” said Michelle Perdue, CCSAPP project coordinator. “We want to show the community that students are learning to recognize the difference. They are using their own voices to rise above negative influences in life.” Above the Influence is part of the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, a program of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. This campaign is inspired by what teens have said about their lives, and how they deal with the influences that shape their decisions. "Through previous volunteer work with CCSAPP, I have seen the value of the work that they do with students,” said Brittany Williams, second-year pharmacy student at Marshall University School of Pharmacy and Student Executive Council treasurer. “I wanted to find a way for MUSOP students to have that same impact on Cabell County ’s youth. Substance abuse is a huge problem in our communities, and it is imperative that we take action now to educate the next generation about the importance of living ‘Above the Influence.’” Williams said given that October is National Pharmacy Month and National Prevention Month, the students thought this was a great way to involve MUSOP students in prevention efforts. “We are very pleased that our students have taken the lead on this community initiative,” said Kevin W. Yingling, R.Ph.,M.D., dean of the Marshall University School of Pharmacy. “This outreach activity allows the school to highlight the role of pharmacists in the fight against substance abuse, as well as educate young students on careers available in pharmacy.” For contest rules for each school and for more information about CCSAPP, visit CCSAPP.org.
