Posting 1502 We are swinging back to the time frame of the seventies, today. Here is a nostalgic number Junior by SPB, in the lyrics of Kannadasan & the music score of MSV. The film was Avargal (அவர்கள்), which was a triangular love story written & directed by K. Balachander in 1977 starring Sujatha, Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth & is stated to be one of most sensitive movies on women’s lib. The novelty of the picturisation of the song is that the hero sings along with his ventriloquism dummy. Ventriloquism is an act of stagecraft in which the ventriloquist changes his voice so that it appears that the voice is coming from elsewhere, usually a puppeteered dummy. The whole gamut of an expert ventriloquist involves orchestrated efforts in speaking without moving ones lips, changing the voice, animating the dummy properly etc. Kamal took special training to appear as an authentic ventriloquist for this movie. However, the dummys voice belonged to late Sadhan of MSVs ensemble. The sequence was shot at one of the thatched cottages at Silver Sands Resort near Mahabalipuram, then owned by Veecumsees, who also owned Safire Theatre, Madras. The ventriloquism emerged as entertainment in the eighteenth century, though it had its roots in being manifested as the work of spiritual forces. I first witnessed the act of a ventriloquist in a Restaurant near Gate Way of India, Bombay back in early seventies. Vent Haven Museum in the U.S is the only museum in the world dedicated to the art of ventriloquism, with many exhibits & memorabilia. youtu.be/gG8mHhuelnU
