Postponement of Pemberton’s arraignment, driven by VFA – youth group lfs.ph/…/postponement-of-pembertons-arraignment…/ The youth group League of Filipino Students (LFS) called the postponement of Private First Class Joseph Scott Pemberton’s arraignment scheduled today as a delaying tactic for spurred by the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA). Pemberton is the prime suspect behind the murder of Jennifer Laude. “Pemberton’s camp seemingly wants to take advantage of the VFA and extend the judicial proceedings beyond the one year period in order to provide an escape route for their client. We must not let that happen. We must not let another US serviceman run away with his crime,” said LFS National Spokesperson Charlotte Velasco. VFA provides that if the Philippine judicial proceedings are not completed within one (1) year, the US will be relieved of the obligation to present their personnel before the court. LFS condemned the Aquino government’s pronounced refusal to takeover custody over Pemberton. “The Philippine government has no right to surrender its custody over the criminal. If the Aquino regime is trying to prove something by doing so, it’s only proving its fawning subservience to the United States and negligence against its own people,” said Velasco. “The slow pace of the proceedings indicate that it is very urgent for the Philippine government to demand custody over Pemberton,” she added. LFS also denounced Pemberton’s detainment inside a JUSMAG facility, saying it demonstrates the regime’s special treatment over the suspect. The youth group also renewed their call for the scrapping of VFA as well as the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA). “Pemberton deserves to be imprisoned in a regular jail. The special treatment given him shows how unequal military agreements like the VFA makes a travesty of our laws and sovereignty. This case urges us to reinvigorate our call to terminate VFA as well as EDCA,” ended Velasco.###
