Potty Mouth~ :) Recently a mother with two little boys on the spectrum, one being non-verbal asked for potty training advice.....Our son Colton is non-verbal as well and wasnt potty trained until he was 7 years old. We were provided with diapers through a program with FNR, I will never forget picking up cases of diapers for him. I remember feeling like it was so difficult to expect respite workers and his school aides to deal with changing a diaper on a standing 7 year old......With Colton he dealt with so many digestion issues that he really didnt have to many bms during the day and he also for some reason didnt pee at night. So, one day during the summer, I decided that I was going to do it, I got rid of the diapers completely, knowing that I was a clean freak and would be totally disciplined in taking him to try simply to save my home. We took the boys camping and for the most part spent the entire time focusing on going potty and when he did, showing him what he was doing and helping him connect the dot. Boys love peeing outdoors, even typical kids, so it made it mess free and he thought it was kinda cool! This started the process and when we got home it took preventatively taking trips around when he drank and when we were leaving or arriving places. I could always see his bms coming and knew about what time in the day to keep good track of him.....We also had a lot of luck with both our boys having a stool for them to feel more secure on the toilet. A fun game is to take a square of tp and float it, see if they can aim and get it, simple, but fun and teaches them to not pee outside of that space! I never condone using treats to stop bad behaviors, but I do believe in using treats to celebrate success, so a jar of goodies in the bathroom and a sticker chart can motivate too!!!!! I told this Mom that imitation is vital, a lot of these kids, especially the non verbal, are visual learners, so whenever their Dad had to use the bathroom, they went along, this helped soooooooooo much!!!!! So, when you decide its time, stick to it and dont give up, Colton is totally independent now and I love buying him cute undies, cause I still can, Autism perks!!!!!! Good Luck Hero Mommys! ~
