Power News (Oct 7) : Brimming reservoirs can’t ensure stable power in Kerala Source: Business Line, Our Bureau / Thiruvananthapuram, 7th Oct, 2013 How a bumper monsoon and near-full reservoirs are not enough to underwrite supply of stable and quality power in Kerala is proving in no uncertain terms these days. Present installed capacity at around 2,300 MW, of which only 70 per cent it utilised at any given time, is no match for peak evening demand, which ranges between 3,100 and 3,200 MW. Per capita consumption in the State has shown a significant increase in view of industrialisation and increased use of electrical household goods, Kerala State Electricity Board notes. The shortfall in availability of power has to be made up by contributions from the Central pool as well as purchases from outside sources. Here’s where the system, or the lack of it, pinches. Non-availability of ‘transmission corridors’ (lines) is proving a major constraint for import of power even if it is available from outside. Proposed evacuation plans of Power Grid Corporation generally tend to favour transmitting surplus power to Western and Northern regions. According to the board, Kerala does not figure in its scheme of things. The State has had to undergo unannounced restrictions in supply from Friday due mainly to fall in allocations from the Central pool. The daily allocation from the Talcher plant in Orissa is 420 MW. This had reduced to a trickle to 75 MW on Saturday following a technical snag and coal shortage, the Electricity Board said. Resulting peak load shortfall of 300 MW and no ‘transmission corridor’ to ferry in power from elsewhere had left the Board with no option but to impose restrictions during the evening hours. The State has had to undergo unannounced restrictions in supply from Friday due mainly to fall in allocations from the Central pool. thehindubusinessline/todays-paper/tp-others/tp-states/brimming-reservoirs-cant-ensure-stable-power-in-kerala/article5208007.ece
