Power Play seals victory for the England Fives in South Africas first Match. England Fives have lived up to their early billing of finals contenders with a strong showing against SPAR South Africa at the FAST5 Netball World Series, winning 44-22. A number of unforced errors by both sides saw the match see-saw in the opening minutes as the teams settled into a rhythm, England’s Rachel Dunn finally sinking the first one-point goal midway through the first quarter. England, on the end of a month-long tour of Australasia, set the crowd alight with Kadeen Corbin sinking the first three-pointer of the match, edging England out to a 6-2 lead at the quarter-time break. Strong defensive pressure from England in the first half forced South Africa into shooting from the one-point zone, ticking the score along more slowly than what they would have liked. The shortened form of the game without the wing attack and wing defence positions caused a few problems for the South African team as they struggled to bring clean ball through-court. England Coach Anna Mayes said she was pleased with the way her side performed in their opening game. “We have always tried to embrace the FAST5 game – we love this game - and we made sure we got everyone out there and involved. We knew we had to be clinical with our possession because South Africa has some great three-point shooters – that was absolutely key for us.” The match was still up for grabs 13-4 in England’s favour at half-time as South Africa introduced their ‘power-play’ quarter where all goal points are doubled. However it was England with the ascendancy as shooter Jo Harten caused havoc with her shooting accuracy from the two-point zone assisted by Rosie Allison. A late surge by the South African shooters closed the gap to four points heading into the final stanza. England elected to implement their ‘power play’ and, with Harten and Dunn in outstanding form, the score stretched to an unassailable lead.
