Power Talk: Is fun, really fun indeed? In recent events, we have seen some unruly and immoral acts by young people across the country all in the name of having fun. This has led to many getting drunk, injured, hospitalised some losing their lives. We are therefore left with a question, Is fun, really fun indeed? It goes without saying that young people have really lost it. We sometimes become nice and pamper peoples feelings in the name of caring and tend to be afraid to be labelled judgmental. Both Christians and non-Christians would use Matthew 7:1 as an escape goat to do acts of immorality. Well, someone must fearlessly stand up and say something about this before we lose it altogether. Without fear or favour, I write... Growing up ekasi, when someone who was an elder; be it our parent, relative or neighbour would chasten us for a wrong doing we would listen accept wrong and correct the mistake. Today elders are labelled judgmental and irrelevant to our times when they try to guide and correct us in love. We are quick to quote rights without knowing their responsibilities. What in the world are we trying to prove? I get heartbroken when you speak to young people in the street and on social media trying to guide them and they say YOLO [You Only Live Once] or Who are you to judge? Well the truth of the matter is that YES indeed YOLO however HOW ARE YOU LIVING YOUR LIFE? We need to ask: Does your life really reflect dignity, integrity and high-moral values? Will everyone at your funeral say We have lost a great soul. A man/woman of substance. Will people cry that you didnt make peace with the world or will they cry that you have left them whilst doing some amazing things? Just a year ago I was invited to speak at a memorial service of a young guy around our community I had known for some fear years. At some point, I was running out of words because there was not much I could say and instead I motivated the ones who were raining on earth not to live lives that are unruly and will cause problems for others who are remaining. Im not perfect and nor am I trying to claim that I am, but when I know that you are living a life that will get you and us into trouble, I will not be silenced. I will tell you straight that you need to change your ways. Rather you call me judgmental than let you drown your life into the deep end. We cant lose lawyers, doctors, scientists, researchers and business men/women like flies all in the name of fun. Listen, dont wait on Abuti Rams, your pastor or parents to tell you that you are messing up your life. Listen to the inner voice thats always saying NO when you try to do something that will have bad consequences. You can call it Holy Spirit, inner man or anything; just make sure you listen to it and dont ignore it. Just before you accept an invite to have fun, I want you to ask yourself this Is fun, really fun indeed? #PowerTalk with Abuti Rams
