Power crisis in valley makes Kashmir professor a scientist SHABIR AHMAD KAshmir times ANANTNAG, July 6: He comes from a teaching background but seeing his valley reeling under darkness despite being abundant in resources for power generation made him to think over the solution. Two and half years of his hard work finally paid off as he came up with the turbine that can generate power from low flowing waters. Hailing from this south Kashmir township, Barkat Nida, a professor at degree college boys Khanabal, had quest to do something for his people since his childhood. However, on seeing the power scenario of the valley getting from bad to worse every day particularly in winters, Nida in consultation with another innovative brain and a friend decided to invent a power generating device which could help the state come out of the power crisis. “Since our valley is richest in water resources which remain unutilized due to the lack of technology. In order to utilize this water I along with another friend, Khursheed Ahmad Itoo of Noru Kokernag started working on the turbine which could generate power from slow flowing rivers and streams. It took us two and half years to prepare the machine and has been successfully put on trial in Lidder river at Jasibal Aishmuqam,” says Nida. He says that the trial was conducted in a simple river flow situation without any civil works in the river flow. Nida claims that with his invention 15000 MW of hydro power can be generated in addition to 20000 MW already estimated by the government through traditional technology. “The technology needs absolutely no dams or barriers to raise the water level for power generation. The factory made car size portable machine if installed in cascading manner can generate 15000 MWs in the rivers and canals of Kashmir without disturbing eco-system,” Nida claims. Costing about 5 lakh rupees each machine, Nida says will generate 10 KWs of power. “I have written to the power commissioner and assured him that I will ensure the power supply to entire district by pressing my invention into service. But there is no response so far,” says Nida. Nida, whose invention is pending patent vide number 6/DEL/2013 says that he has received offers from Karnataka for his invention but says that he is yet to sign the deal with the hydro power company.
