Powerful quake strikes Philippines b4in.org/fVr A 7.2-magnitude quake struck the southeastern Philippines on Thursday October 15, 2013, according to USGS. An earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale has struck the southeastern Philippines, the US Geological Survey (USGS) has said. The agency said the quake occurred at 08:12 local time (0012 GMT) on Thursday, some five kilometres east of Balilihan, in the Bohol region of the archipelago, and struck at a depth of 56 kilometres, AFP reported. The epicenter of the trembler was located 629 kilometres from the capital Manila. The quake was followed by two aftershocks, each measuring more than 5.0 in magnitude. USGS issued a yellow warning, after the quake, saying “some casualties and damage are possible and the impact should be relatively localized. Past yellow alerts have required a local or regional level response.” The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a Pacific-wide tsunami warning related to the quake. There were also no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Balilihan, a town with the population of around 18,500, is one of the Philippines key tourist hubs. The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, which is an area with intense seismic and volcanic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates. A magnitude-7.7 quake killed nearly 2,000 people on the northern island of Luzon in 1990. More b4in.org/fVr
