Pragmatism = a system of or tendency in philosophy which test the validity of all concepts by their practical results. Jesus asking Peter if he loved Jesus was told to tend the lambs and feed the sheep and that the eventual end of giving out this kind of love would be death. Peter loving Jesus ends in death. (John :15-18) Being a disciple always ends in death... we are to pick up our cross and follow Him.. what does this look like? A holy man was a wonderful example of this... he was the pastor and mentor that helped me to be human after years of being told that my desires had no merit. Almost every word that God spoke to me about him had to do with love. He has learned how to love. He is a faithful father to the church . He loves the bride of Christ . Then came the death sentence of terminal lung cancer ; yet still he loved and still he trusted and I see that this is how he brought glory to God- trusting when others are healed but not him- others are provided for because he makes sure that they are while his needs are just as great and even if though he was not restored to health yet still he loved and still he trusted. He loved his own even tilI the end. In the pragmatic way of the world hekingowould have looked like a failure- a poor pastor of a small church in a small town. But his life showed the worth and the glory of God and the cost of being a disciple. Show us your kingdom purpose behind the trials and tribulations, behind the sickness and the joblessness , when there are no answers and the heavens seem like brass. But You are faithful and you promised that these things will come but You are greater than these and have overcome them. Your promises more solid and Your love more real, so strengthen us in Your love to overcome and to love You as You are loved in heaven. That Your name may be glorified for You are mighty to save, great in mercy and abundant in love.
