Praise the Lord !!! “All hard work brings a profit, ...” (Proverbs 14:23) “He who works in his land will have abundant food, ...” (Proverbs 12:11) A man once came to the conclusion that living in quiet contemplation away from human society was the sure path to happiness. He wandered into the desert to become a hermit. After many days, he found a cave near a spring where he could obtain water and grow a few plants for food. Feeling self-sufficient, he spent many idle hours in solitude. Eventually the hours of the day seemed never to end. His loneliness oppressed him. Feeling more wretched than holy, he prayed, “Father God, let me die. I am weary of this life.” Exhausted, he fell asleep and dreamed that an angel stood before him saying, “Cut down the palm tree that grows near the spring and turn its fibres into a rope.” The hermit awoke and with great effort and many hours of toil, he cut the palm and made a coil of rope from its fibres. Again the angel appeared to him saying, “You looked happy everyday as you worked. I infer from your appearance and attitude that you are no longer weary of life. Go back into the world with this rope and find employment with it. Let it remind you that toiling is sweet.” Dear friends, God put Adam in the garden of Eden, not just to roam around, admire and enjoy the nature but to work in it and take care of it (Genesis 2:15). So let us not grumble or complain about working. Work not only benefits the mind and wallet, but the body, emotions and soul. Work keeps all parts of the human machine in order. Just as machines rust out faster than they wear out, so too with people. I read of an interesting statement in a book - “One thing you can learn from the clock is that it passes time by keeping its hands busy”. How apt it is! So let us also be busy bodies. Let us work with all our might, whatever job God has called us to do. PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me to realize the joy that is there in working. Let me not be lazy. Let me not also be a workaholic. But let me work while I work and relax while I relax, so that I would be healthy and be useful to my family, community and above all, to you. Amen.
