Prayer Conference at Grace Baptist Church Thailand October 10, 2013 Dr. Jim Newton of Raimer Road Baptist Church (Ohio) DIFFERENT PARTS OF PRAYERS Daniel 9:1-2 - Prayer is important - greatest failure is when we dont pray It is helpful to examine the prayer of Daniel. - Daniel will follow the Lord whatever the cause - he has the courage to live in a foreign country - show great courage for God Daniel 6:10 - he spend time with God - he is a man of prayer - man of good character Daniel 9:3-4 - shows Daniels heart with humbleness (sackcloth) - humbles himself before God God hates pride, He wants us to be humble. Remember our sinfulness, see our failures. Daniel says: God is.... * great * dreadful- to be reverence I. PRAYER IS IN RESPONSE TO GODS WORD Daniel 9:2 - he study and understand Gods Word - prompted him to pray to God Prayer life cannot be separated in the Word of God. WHY PRAY? Man has the responsibility to pray. v.9 - to cry out to God Scriptures has many things to teach us. Ps. 119:24 - Gods Word is a counsel to us. Ps. 119:99 - spend time and meditate Gods Word RESPOND ON WHAT YOU HAVE READ IN GODS WORD. Ezra 9:4 - what causes the captivity (false worship, rebellion against God) Ezra 9:5 - they realized their sinfulness to God Ezra cried to God. Nehemiah 8:5 - by thanksgiving, confession PRAYER IS GROUNDED IN GODS WILL. II. PRAYER IS NOT TO CHANGE GODS PLAN - we are trying to pray to change Gods plan - but to line-up our prayer to His will Rev. 6:9-11 - many died because of their faith to Jesus Christ How long will you begin to pray? GOD WILL NOT FORSAKE HIS WILL. III. PRAYER IS CHARACTERIZED BY PASSION - Daniel shows his passion from his heart v.3 - persistent prayer GOD WILL ANSWER OUR PRAYERS. James 5:16 Elijah - prayed earnestly v.20 - Daniel set his face to the Lord. As we pray, we can affect this earth. PRAYER IS A LINK BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH. Our prayer is not enough, we need to pray more. PRAY ACCORDING TO GODS WILL. IV. PRAYER REQUIRES SELF-DENIAL Daniel 9:4 - spend time in confessing to the Lord Daniel recognized his own wickedness. - he need to deny himself SELFISHNESS NEVER SEES GODS WORK. James 4:3 WE ASK IN SELFISHNESS THATS WHY GOD WILL NOT ANSWER US ACCORDING TO WHAT WE WANT. Gen. 18:27 - Abraham recognized what was in his heart Daniel asked God for a great repentance. V. PRAYER IDENTIFIES WITH GODS PEOPLE Daniel 9:5-7;11 - we need to identify the needs of the people Eph. 6:1-19 - we are part of the body of Christ - we are brothers and sisters Gal. 6:2 - love one another - bear ye ones anothers burdens PRAY FOR EACH OTHER. VI. PRAYER IS STRENGTHEN WHEN WE CONFESS Daniel 9:20 v.6-9 - Daniel is praying and confessing v.10-15 - while confessing, he shows Gods character Rom. 7:9 Paul- chief of the sinner Jer. 3:21-25 Daniel identifies his sins and his people. WE ARE ALL GUILTY BEFORE God. VII. PRAYER IS DEPENDENT IN GODS CHARACTER v.4 - God is great and dreadful GOD IS ABLE TO MEET OUR NEEDS. * Do not pray if you will not believe that God will not answer. God is : - majesty, worthy of our praises - faithful, keeps all His promises, restore and keep His Words - holy, do what is right - forgiving - merciful - righteous VIII. PRAYER RESULTS IN GODS GLORY v. 16-19 Our sins corrupt Gods reputation. Ps. 102:12-19 - people will know Gods goodness, faithfulness - do it for your own glory
