Prayer warriors Nick will be having a bone marrow aspiration Thursday morning to ensure he is still in remission in order to begin new chemo and radiation next week. We need to see ZERO leukemia blasts in the sample to move forward. Remember that leukemia is different from tumor type cancers. Remission needs to occur within the first 30 days of diagnosis for best results (DONE!) and the rest of the treatment (longer than many other types of cancers) is to ensure remission continues. In Nick’s case, he was finished with treatment with no evidence of disease in the spring of 2012 but apparently, a few rogue cells were hiding and began multiplying again after treatment stopped. The recurrence was in his cerebral spinal fluid (not bone marrow) so radiation will be targeted to the brain. If blasts are found in bone marrow (where none were a year ago)…well…things change drastically. We will focus on the positive and pray for NO BLASTS and continued good results as he begins radiation. The new chemo also can cause nerve damage to which he is highly susceptible (thus the problems with walking earlier) so prayers that those side-effects are non-existent as well Thanks for all your support, both spoken and unspoken!
