**Prayers for Oregon Soldier and Families** Nick Welch, a 23-year-old soldier from Mill City, is in critical condition in Germany after being wounded in a bomb blast that killed three others in Afghanistan, the Statesman-Journal reports. The newspaper quotes a family friend, who says his family has flown to Germany to be with him. Another family friend has called for a vigil at 9 p.m. Thursday night at Santiam Canyon High School, where Welch played football. Details of the vigil are posted on a Facebook page called "Fight for Nick Welch." The Defense Department announced Thursday that three soldiers assigned to Fort Stewart, Ga., were killed Tuesday when caught by the blast of an improvised bomb in Soltan Kheyl, Afghanistan. The dead are: First Lt. Jonam Russell, 25, of Cornville, Ariz., Sgt. Stefan M. Smith, 24 of Glennville, Ga., and Spc. Rob L. Nichols, 24, of Colorado Springs, Colo.
