Praying Mantis - Mantis religiosa on dew covered grass. Taken Saturday morning July 26, 2014 on 40 Acre Lake Trail at Brazos Bend State Park. I was lugging around both long glass and macro, but macro seemed to be winning out. I stopped to look over this area with dew-covered grasses, for small critters, when I spotted several damselflies hovering around. Its funny how they look like a small bug flying around, until you get up close and see the segmented abdomen and wings. Anyway, scanning left and right as I was kneeling down, I spotted the small mantis. I have not seen one in years. Probably because I just have not looked close enough. I was actually hoping the sun would pop just a little into this area under the trees. I was there for over an hour and it never made it. I worked my way around and shot different views, with the mantis following me with its eyes the whole time. I was having a time of it trying to get low enough to get parallel with its body, so I had to go with F8- F14 most of the time to get most of it in focus. I wanted more blur, but just could not get the angle to shoot wider open. Canon 1DX + Canon 180mm F3.5L Macro + (2) stacked Canon EF12 II extension tubes 1/20 @ F14, 180mm, +1/3 EV, ISO 800, no flash, AV priority, spot metering, on tripod.
