Precisely why it is utterly critical to to seek therapeutic interventions for traumatic grief by those who are *well-skilled*, deeply experienced, and well-educated. It is true that mindfulness practice, yoga, and other contemplative practices can help those traumatically bereaved tremendously. However, when a grieving person is struggling with the lingering effects of trauma, it is quite important to ones emotional and psychological safety to be present with an educated, experienced, and superbly-trained provider. While I often do not accept the medical models assessments in terms of pathologizing grief, there is no doubt that traumatic grief incites many difficulties in regaining equilibrium and can have negative psychological sequelae. Please, as Ive said many times previously, seek help by a qualified person with direct practice experience in the field, even with mindfulness or contemplative-based interventions. If you are seeking yoga, meditation, contemplative practice, or counseling services, or even if you are going to a meditation retreat, please do so carefully because you may be vulnerable and they arent always beneficial (depending on the environment and the skill and experience of those providing services or leading the group): There is a lot of enthusiasm for mindfulness-based therapies and they are very powerful interventions, Ruths said. But they can also have side-effects. Mindfulness is delivered to potentially vulnerable people... so it needs to be taught by people who know... when to refer people for specialist help.
