Remy scored in the 13th minute after Paulinho lost out to Yoan Gouffran in midfield. Gouffran was quick to slide a ball ahead of him for Remy to knock round Brad Friedel before he slotted it coolly into the goal. Newcastle defended well, but Spurs still had numerous chances. Paulinho, Roberto Soldado and Christian Eriksen all brought good saves from Krul. In the second half, Spurs dominated. Krul was outstanding, producing saves from Andros Townsend, Soldado, and an Eriksen free kick that took a wicked deflection off Cheick Tiote in the wall. With 10 minutes left, he pulled off another great save after Pauline stabbed the ball towards goal. On 84 minutes, Krul failed to stop a Jan Vertonghen header, but the woodwork didn’t. Despite their efforts, Spurs couldnt find a way past the excellent Krul. KEY MOMENTS 13’ - REMY GOAL: Gouffran is quick to send the ball forward to Remy after winning the ball in midfield. Remy takes two touches to round the ‘keeper and put Newcastle ahead. 30’ - SOLDADO CHANCE: Soldado flicks on an Eriksen header at the near post that is aimed at Krul’s top corner, but the ‘keeper leaps to his right to keep the ball out. 43’ - PAULINHO CHANCE: This time Krul hurls himself left to palm away a curling shot from Paulinho. 53’ - AMAZING SAVE BY KRUL: Eriksen’s free kick hits Tiote in the head and despite the deflection Krul does brilliantly to keep it out. 71’ - TOWNSEND CHANCE: Townsend cuts in from the left and fires a shot into the far corner, that appears to be going in until Krul, at full stretch, pushes away. 82’ - ANOTHER KRUL SAVE: Paulinho stabs a low pass towards goal but yet again Krul is on hand to save. 85’ - VERTONGHEN HITS THE BAR: This time it’s the crossbar to the rescue as Vertonghen heads against the woodwork at the back post. TALKING POINT: Is Andros Townsend a better option than Aaron Lennon? Townsend has one trick, which is to run down the right wing and then cut into his left. If he was clever enough to make it work more often it would be understandable, but at the moment he appears to be holding Spurs back. MATCHCAST: FULL COMMENTARY AND PLAYER RATINGS KEY STATS Spurs have only scored 34 goals in 25 Premier League home games under Andre Villas-Boas. Of the 34 goals scored by Newcastle in the Premier League, none have been scored by an Englishman. Spurs had 31 shots in the game, 21 of which were on target. MAN OF THE MATCH Tim Krul (Newcastle United): With countless saves, a few of them genuinely excellent, it is unlikely that there are many other ‘keepers in the world who could have done the same for Newcastle today.
