Preparing for School with Allergies and Asthma - American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Students with asthma, allergies, or both, need to be prepared for school as do the environments in which they work, eat and play. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) over 10 million children under age 18 have asthma, 11 percent suffer from respiratory allergies and 6 percent have been diagnosed with food allergies. On any given day > 10,000 children miss school due to asthma, adding up to millions of lost days every year. The classroom – and the playing field – can be full of triggers for children who suffer from allergies and asthma. “Parents need to be advocates for their kids, to help ensure they’re ... able to navigate the triggers that sometimes stand in their way,” said allergist Michael Foggs, MD, ACAAI president. The link below includes some tips from ACAAI to help parents prepare their children for healthy, symptom-free days in the classroom and on the sports field.
