Preparing for a Pro environment Rally. Given the seriousness of preserving the earth and its resources, we have resolved to organise a rally under the aegis of Poona Diocese. In the days ahead, we shall be raising awareness about the urgency of the entire issue of ecology and the importance of the rally in the City of Pune. Therefore, I will also be writing to you from time to time on the issue of ecology. The issue of ecology has become one of the prime concerns of people all over the world. The Popes of our times have been helping us to take up this matter in the light of our Christian faith. For the Church in our Asian continent too, commitment to the universe has been an important priority in the pastoral ministry. For the last several years, the Office of Theological Concerns under the aegis of FABC (Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences) has been seriously reflecting on the challenge of ecology in the light of Christian faith. For us as Christians, the Word of God is the principle, the norm and the criterion of our thinking, planning and acting. The Synod of Bishops on the Word of God has inspired us to carry out all pastoral activity and our mission in the light of God’s Word. The Word of God illuminates, stirs, strengthens, enlivens and delights us. Accordingly, we have to promote ecological balance and harmony in the light of the Word of God. This is important for us as Christians. The politicians, social activists, economists and others of secular provenance have their own approach and perspective which certainly has to be upheld and valued. We certainly have to collaborate with them for the cause of environment. But our approach has to be distinctive and complementary. In the light of the Word of God, we can show that our religion demands dedication to the cause of ecology. TO BE CONTINUED
