Preparing the special sand art ready for the WARDARNJI FESTIVAL big corroboree again this year is moorditj artist Turid Calgaret Turids mother is Nyungar and she was part of the ‘Stolen Generation’. Turid also has connections to the Kimberley through her grandfather, who was Mirrawong/Gadgerong. Her father was Norwegian. Turid’s childhood school years were difficult due to her heritage, which has had some impact on her growing up. She uses art as therapy and as a reconnection to her family, ancestors, country and culture. The Waagal’s image is a representation of these elements in a lot of her work, combined with the earthy colours that she paints with. Turid has always had an interest in art, particularly drawing;; however, it wasn’t until Turid was thirty, that she became serious about art and its practices. Turid studied Visual Arts and Contemporary Craft at the Kidogo Art Institute in Fremantle and at the Central Institute of Technology in Perth. In 2013 Turid exhibited her work in two exhibitions; Emerging – Aboriginal Artists from Central Institute of Technology, which was part of the WA Heritage Festival in Perth, and Third Space group exhibition held at the Mundaring Art Centre. Turid continues to study the Arts and has currently included Business as part of her curriculum. She is keen to continue her education as an artist and as an artsworker to build on her practice and become a successful artist. We are so happy that she is designing and creating the special art again this year as it is such an important, iconic part of WARDARJI, this Saturday 12 to 5pm at the Fremantle Arts Centre
