President Daniel Ortega exercising the absolute power that he and his wife have over the country, made the National Congress approve in only one day the creation of a law to build an Interoceanic Canal. This law was not consulted at all with the population. The next day, it was approved and a concession was issued at a dizzying speed, even though this will affect Nicaragua for the next 100 years and the concession was give to a Chinese man named Wang Jing who at the time was unknown. The concession just gives Wang Jing rights but doesn’t impose any obligations on him. The concession was done without any bidding process and includes an airport, two seaports, a train and two free-trade zones.All of the national territory has been made available for these projects to be built wherever Wang Jing decides, and he will be given the necessary permits regardless of what he decides to do. He’ll have all the licensing, permits and authorization that he demands. The Nicaraguan State will not receive a single centavo in taxes for any of the projects.According to the signed agreement, the Chinese company is outside of any national norms, free from all administrative, civil, or criminal responsibility, even if they fail to comply with their obligations.
