President Jacob Zuma had an egg on his face when a student funded by his JG Zuma Foundation lashed out at South Africas education system. Mphirime Lafe (21) from the Free State, who is studying Chemistry at the American University of Nigeria was spitting fire at the students send-off at DL Dube House, Durban, on Monday. His gripe is that in Mzansi 30% is accepted as a pass while in Nigeria 70% is required to be accepted at a university. Our education system really failed us as black Africans because in Nigeria there is no 30% pass mark. That is regarded as total failure in Nigeria, said Lefa. Even when you get 60% in matric, they reject you at the universities. Its funny here that when you attain that 60% mark, you are hailed as a top student. Lefa said he and his five fellow students found the going tough in Nigeria. Local students found the tests easy. If our government could change the pass mark, that would help us prepare for tougher conditions outside the country The above article was published in the Daily Sun, 15 January 2014 Share your thoughts.
