President Kabila to postpone 2016 presidential election The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) says it may postpone the 2016 presidential election.DRC government spokesman, Lambert Mende, said on Friday that the presidential poll “could take place in 2016 or it could take place in 2017.”Mende expressed hope that the poll would be held on schedule, adding that the DRC “has a Senate that has overrun the term it was accorded by three years, and the sky hasn’t fallen on our heads.” The possible postponement has renewed allegations by the opposition parties that the incumbent president, Joseph Kabila, is trying to extend his term.On Thursday, coalition opposition parties called on protesters in the capital, Kinshasa, to occupy the parliament building next Monday to stop passing any laws affecting the election. Kabila has been the DRC president since 2001. He is serving asecond five-year term as the elected president.Culled from Presstv
