President Ma Ying-jeou spoke Monday about the importance of traditional Chinese characters — the type of writing used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau — and cited a story related in CNAs new book about the value of learning the historic writing system. Meeting with representatives of Chinese schools in Japan at the Presidential Office, Ma said that traditional characters portray the stories behind each Chinese word. China has simplified characters since the 1950s, removing parts of the characters to reduce the numbers of strokes it takes to write them, and even in some cases combining similar words into one character. Chinese-speaking communities in Singapore, Malaysia, and most of the rest of the world have followed suit. (Taipei Times)
