President Obama Nominates Candidates for the D.C. Circuit On June 4, 2013, President Obama nominated three candidates to fill the remaining three vacancies on the D.C. Circuit. His nominees will bring much needed diversity and a wealth of experience do the D.C. Circuit. They are: •The Honorable Robert L. Wilkins whom the National Bar Association has applauded as “a respected appellate jurist, celebrated litigator, effective community mobilizer and groundbreaking civil rights leader.” • Patricia Ann Millett, whom the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law “proudly supports” stating that she “has been one of the nation’s finest legal advocates.” Ms. Millett has argued a total of 32 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. •Cornelia T.L. “Nina” Pillard, of whom the NAACP Legal Defense Fund states, “In the finest tradition of law, Nina has dedicated her career to public service and legal education.” Senate Republicans have signaled that they plan to not only block any additional D.C. Circuit nominations made by President Obama, but Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA), the leading Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has proposed legislation to cut the number of judges on the D.C. Circuit from 11 to 8, thereby denying President Obama the opportunity to appoint any new judges, bringing balance to the D.C. Circuit, and creating an even bigger backlog of cases on this important court.
