President Obama laid out a clear vision for strengthening - TopicsExpress

President Obama laid out a clear vision for strengthening America’s middle class that draws a clear contrast with the Republican Congress’ partisan political agenda of special interest giveaways and tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. President Obama is right to call on Congress to ensure that all hard working Americans share in our growing economy. The middle class must have the tools to succeed and that starts with giving middle-class American families a tax cut. The President’s middle-class tax cut proposal would put $500 back in the pockets of thousands of families in Nevada and throughout the country. The President also highlighted the many critical issues facing families today. The President highlighted our nation’s success in building a new energy economy, where I am proud to say that Nevada has been a leader. President Obama’s plan to make a community college education free would provide a critical step up to Americans looking to secure higher-paying jobs. And the President is right to call on Congress to give American families peace of mind by expanding paid family leave, so that workers will no longer be forced to choose between keeping their jobs and caring for a sick loved one. Meanwhile, the Republican Senate is spending its third straight week considering a multi-million dollar giveaway to a Canadian oil company to allow them to ship foreign oil overseas. Today, Republicans even blocked the Senate from ensuring that the steel used to build the Keystone pipeline would be made in America. The contrast could not be clearer: Democrats are focused on the priorities of the middle class while the Republican Congress is busy pushing more giveaways to special interests and the very wealthy. There is still plenty of time for Republicans to change course and work with Democrats to strengthen the middle class. I hope they will seize that opportunity.
