President Obama remarked yesterday, according to the NYT, that the world has always been messy and that these situations now on the radar are much less ominous than most of the cold war challenges we faced in the past. Further, he asserts that the only reason these conflicts are so front and center for us is that we have media that brings these conflicts right to our phones uncensored. I tend to agree with him. All those who clamor for him to do something as regards ISIS; what is there to do? They are tribal. They will always be about killing one another. There are no good guys in this fight. There is a great deal of human suffering, but no good guys. Were we to quash ISIS by some means of military might, those who were previously their enemies would rise up and engage in the same behavior. We went in there and at the expense of 5000 of our young men (along with another 5000 suicides upon return), rid the place of Saddam Hussein and tried to set up a democracy. Did not happen. Will not happen. Democracies require an educated populace. If I am not mistaken (and I well could be) the most educated populace in the region is Iran. With the majority of their population under the age of 40, Id expect liberty to emerge there before anywhere else in the region.
