President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto have earned accolades from teachers in Africa for championing quality education. Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Chairman Wilson Sossion has revealed that representatives of teachers from all over the continent have picked President Kenyatta and his deputy as models champions of quality education. “The teachers of Africa have selected President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto as champions of quality education and we will congregate in January to fete them,” he said. Mr Sossion spoke on Thursday night at an event where President Kenyatta met Kenyans living in New York. Mr Sossion is among teachers’ representatives who attended meetings at the sidelines of the 69th United Nations General Assembly to champion the interest of teachers. Mr Sossion also described President Kenyatta as a devoted leader who has the interest of the public at heart. “You have done a commendable job in your short period as President in improving the lives of Kenyans, teachers included,” said Mr Sossion who was among many Kenyans who came to see the President after his successful first mission to the United Nations. The KNUT boss said teachers have no doubt about the Government’s determination to make the country a better place for all Kenyans. “You are one devoted leader who has done well. We commend you and we will give you less trouble from now on,” Mr Sossion said amid applause from the Kenyans who congregated at the Grand Hyatt hotel. Mr Sossion said Kenya was close to attaining Education For All goals and was an outstanding example for the rest of Africa. Other Kenyan leaders who attended the meeting included Cabinet Secretaries Amina Mohamed (Foreign Affairs), Judy Wakhungu (Water and Environment), Rachael Omamo (Defence) and Joseph ole Lenku (Internal Security). Other included members of parliamentary committees on health, environment and defence and foreign relations. The committee members were official delegates attending the meetings that accompanied the United Nations General Assembly. They attended meetings that were chaired by President Kenyatta including health and green energy. They also attended meetings where the President was a key speaker. ENDS.
