President disbands Kenya at 50 celebrations committee, Nairobi, 2nd August 2013, PSCU Kenya at 50 celebrations committee has been disbanded. In a statement issued from State Nairobi, President Kenyatta said he has disbanded the committee because it seems to be out of touch with the financial mood in the Government. The President said although fifty years of ‘Uhuru’ is an important landmark in the national calendar and offers occasion to reflect on how far the country has come, celebrations need not be done without considering the difficult economic conditions that currently prevail. “By suggesting such an astronomical expenditure on celebrations, the committee clearly showed itself to be out of touch with the financial mood in government” the President said. President Kenyatta said a new committee will be reconstituted to take over planning of the celebrations. State House will now provide oversight of the new committee which will include strong representation from the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Arts and other stakeholders, such as the private sector. The committee which has been disbanded had a provisional budget of Kshs 2.5 billion. Ends…
