Press Briefing Blantyre June 6th, 2013 Umodzi Foundation, a Malawian NGO based in Blantyre; in conjunction with Support a Child Campaign, an initiative by Jew Chapomba; and a former Malawi News Model of the year, Tina Kendrix; held a media briefing today at Oleens Café in Blantyre. During the briefing the two organisations gave an update regarding the progress made so far on Monica Banda Cancer Treatment Campaign. Speaking during the function, Umodzi Foundation CEO, Mr. Samuel Magombo thanked the individuals and organisations who have given money and other resources to the campaign. He however said that the resources so far received are not enough to take Monica for the required treatment in Tanzania. He therefore urged companies and organization to come forward and support this initiative whose result is expected to be “a life saved”. Mr. Magombo explained that so far only about 25% of the total amount required has been solicited with the remaining balance held up in pledges by Companies and individuals. Speaking during the same function, Mr. Patrick Banda, father to the patient made a passionate plea to companies and individuals to come forward and assist his daughter to receive treatment. He graphically described how painful it is for him to everyday see his daughter fading away yet it is possible to save her life if well wishers can assist. Echoing Mr. Banda’s sentiments, Mr. Jew Chapomba of Support a Child Campaign expressed concern that as regards Monica’s situation, there is no doubt that individuals and companies will help, the main challenge is that time is not our side hence the urgent appeal for people to support immediately. There is optimism that the resources will be solicited and that the girl should undergo treatment at Ocean Road Cancer Institute in Tanzania. Signed: Umodzi Foundation Support a Child Campaign
