Press Release 66/1988 (19 August 1998 ) STATEMENT BY DR. THE HON. KENNY ANTHONY, PRIME MINISTER OF SAINT LUCIA AND CHAIRMAN OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM), ON THE NEVIS REFERENDUM The Caribbean Community is relieved at the decision on the part of the people of Nevis to remain in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. This has ensured the continued integrity of the State. It has also provided what could be the last chance for all with the interests of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis at heart to work together to eliminate the root causes of the problems plaguing relations between the two islands comprising that State. A significant number of Nevisians, as reflected in the vote, feel that their relations with St. Kitts do not currently reflect the best interests of Nevis. This perception must be addressed by all concerned, particularly the Administration in St. Kitts. The Caribbean Community is anxious to contribute to this process and to that end will very shortly be sending a high-level mission to the Federation to engage in discussions with the Administration in St. Kitts and the Administration in Nevis. The mission will be lead by Sir James Mitchell, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines . The Community believes that early, frank and direct dialogue between all parties is the surest way to build a strong and harmonious Federation for the future. The Community stands ready to assist in facilitating this opportunity for dialogue by drawing on the important work already done by the Constitutional Commission, as well as development of fresh initiatives. Compromise must replace confrontation. Likewise, constructive engagement must replace divisiveness. The Caribbean Community is irrevocably committed to the improvement of relations between the two islands and the strengthening of the Federation and the Caribbean family. 18 August 1998
