Press Release: New Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan Must Focus on Integration Jan O’Sullivan has been announced as the New Minister for Education today. CEO of The Integration Centre, Killian Forde said “I would like to begin by congratulating the previous Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn, TD on working hard to overhaul a difficult system which is still in many ways stuck in the past. “Under Quinn’s direction the review of patronage took place and admission policies in schools were finally looked into. “Schooling is one of the major cornerstones to successful migrant integration. Migrants come to Ireland to create a better life for themselves and their children, access to education will play a crucial role in the future lives of their children. “Equal access is key to the educational attainment of these children. The Integration Centre carried out research which showed that migrant children are often funnelled into particular schools due to enrolment policies. This often means that in urban areas where there are schools beside each other one will be predominantly migrant whilst the others will be filled with mainly white Irish children. “This causes obvious problems for the integration of these children. Mixed schooling is integral to future social cohesion. “We ask that the new Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan pay particular attention to the needs of new communities in the education system. Further attention must be paid to enrolment processes, with aspects such as the refusal of children on the basis of their religion entirely scrapped.
