Press Release by ICARE ICARE in its emergent General Meeting held on the 18th Oct 2013, to discuss the ongoing ILP agitations and the 36hr bandh call by the proscribed HNLC, arrived at the following resolutions:- 1. That frequent and prolonged bandhs or public curfews, aside from being illegal, are for an underdeveloped state like Meghalaya, anti people and anti poor. They tend to do more harm than good for the very people they profess to champion. 2. The 36 hour bandh call from the 21st till the 22nd Oct given by the HNLC appears to overlook the fact that it is in fact a 48 hour bandh taking into consideration that 20th is a Sunday. It overlooks the reality that there are thousands of daily wage earners who live on a hand to mouth basis who could ill afford three continuous wageless days . Whole families of such poor, especially small innocent children might even be denied their daily sustenance, healthcare or what have you, that salaried folks take for granted. No cause, whoever noble, can justify such injustice to the poor, the marginalised and the voiceless. 3. As a mark of protest against this poverty insensitive 36 hour bandh call, ICARE will organise a public gathering at Khyndai Lad ( Police Bazar) on the Monday the 21st at 10 am. 4. Citizens have also expressed their disgust at both the adamant attitude of agitating NGOs as well as the nonchalant attitude of the Government. The common citizen has been held hostage to this ego ridden standoff. No other term can explain the trauma of the man on the street. A take-it or leave –it offer in the form of the Tenancy Act to counter the ILP demand, reflects very poorly on the seriousness of the Government to resolve the influx issue. People wonder as to why no proactive action is being undertaken against suspected illegal migrants who are already in the state. 5. The Public Gathering of the 21st will enable concerned citizens to express their views on the above two controversial aspects of our social life. All are invited to attend and participate so as to give voice to the real issues affecting us. Toki Blah President ICARE
