Press Release from the Ministry of Information in Fiji: US GOVERNMENT COMMENDS FIJI ELECTION PROCESS The United States of America deputy secretary of State William Burns has commended Fiji’s recent general election and the way it was conducted. Deputy Secretary Burns highlighted this at a meeting with 14 Pacific Islands Developing States’ leaders and representatives in New York this week. At the meeting that was held at the margins of the United Nations’ General Assembly, Deputy Secretary Burns commended Fiji’s contribution to the peacekeeping process across the world. “We are pleased to see the positive steps Fiji took last week with its historic election”, Burn said. “We’re also especially pleased to see the 45 Fijian peacekeepers taken hostage by al-Nusra released after two weeks in captivity. And we commend the Fijian government for its continued commitment to the UN Disengagement Observer Force Mission. Nothing demonstrates better the strength of our resolve” Secretary Burns said. In response, the Fijian Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola thanked Mr. Burns for the 30 election monitors provided to the Multinational Observer Group, who reported that the 2014 election was conducted in a “fair, transparent and democratic manner”. Of the 591,000 registered voters, 81.9% voted at the 2038 polling station, the highest turnout in Fiji’s history. Minister Kubuabola also thanked the US for its assistance towards climate change, capacity building and its recent announcement on assistance on oceans protection and development. Also present at the meeting was the Palau President H.E Thomas Esang Remengesau, the Samoan Prime Minister H.E Tuilaepa Malielegaoi, Cook Islands Premier H.E Henry Puna and other Foreign Ministers from the region.
