Press Release – March 3, 2014 Steve Bates, Candidate for Clackamas County Commission states: It is highly unusual that KOIN 6 would interview two candidates for Multnomah County Chair without consulting candidates or sitting commissioners for Clackamas County. Jim Francesconi’s claim that it is unfair that Multnomah County should bear the cost of its bridges without contribution from Clackamas County is ridiculous. The Constitution of the United States established State jurisdictions. The Oregon Constitution established County jurisdictions. Clark County, Washington residents utilize the bridges of Multnomah County and the City of Portland. Washington County residents utilize the bridges of Multnomah County and the City of Portland. Marion County residents utilize the bridges of Multnomah County and the City of Portland. The people of Clackamas County had no say in the decision to build the bridges in Multnomah County. The people of Clackamas County have been paying taxes to subsidize Multnomah County and the City of Portland for more than thirty years. (Tri-Met Taxes, Metro Taxes and Port of Portland Taxes in addition to State Taxes that have been sent to Portland and Multnomah County to bail out their mismanagement of the past) The people of Clackamas County have been treated like step children when it has come to infrastructure dollars distributed by Metro which is controlled in a large part by the Multnomah County and City of Portland machine. As a candidate for Clackamas County Commissioner, I stand for the people of Clackamas County and say the County Line is the County Line. Multnomah County and the City of Portland have wasted the opportunity to be the leader in the region. Instead, they are now saying others should pay for what they have ignored over the past thirty years. Keep in mind that Clackamas County is providing some of the skilled labor to keep Portland and Multnomah County vibrant. Keep in mind that Clackamas County has been relegated to become the bedroom district for the City of Portland and Multnomah County because of the rules and regulations instigated and enforced by Metro. All of the Metro Codes were in fact favored by all of the City of Portland and Multnomah County representatives on the Metro committees such as JPACT and MPACT. On the other hand, Multnomah County residents use the many bridges and roadways in Clackamas County. Clackamas County makes no claim that they owe us a dime. Because? The County Line is the County Line!
