Press Statement UNITED YOUTH FOR POSITIVE ACTION Jacob Town Somalia Drive Paynesville, Montserrado County Republic of Liberia Cell#: 0776-301-269/0777-923-272/0886-493-926/0886-881-766 November 9, 2014 Ladies and Gentlemen of the press Residents and Close Associates of District#2 One and All Since the news about financial unfairness on the part of some leaders in the fight against Ebola hit the newsstand, we have been feeling reluctant to treat it with any degree of seriousness due to the manner and form in which our people were dying on a daily bases. But, considering the wide spread nature of the unethical and dishonest actions on the part of some of our leaders, it is now incumbent upon us as leaders of the youthful generation of our country to show a light of disagreement against those unacceptable, immoral and fraudulent practices that are gradually engulfing a greater portion of our national leadership. At the risk of being wrongly portrayed, it is important to note that our reaction is based on the well established maxim that says “all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing”. In this given case, the constant rate of dishonesty that is been seriously practice by some of our national leaders are likely to gain currency without appropriate response, which also include the dissemination of the information they intend to conceal from the public when in fact it should be for public consumption. Ladies and gentlemen of the press, after a thorough researched and analysis, we have come to understand that many of our leaders including our District#2 Representative, Hon. Sekou S. Kanneh and others are not practicing transparency and accountability in the fight against this deadly disease call Ebola that is gradually decreasing our country population by the day. Since the outbreak of this killer disease in our land sometime in March of this year, Liberian have been crying and calling on the international community and the world at large to come to our aid due to the lack of adequate funding and medical manpower on the part of our government to combat this deadly virus. Unfortunately, some of our leaders including our district#2 Representatives, Hon. Sekou S. Kanneh have chosen to be unfair by protecting the public from getting detail financial information which is the detriment of the suffering majority. When the news of Ebola hit our country and as a way of being financially responsible and discipline in its combat, the Executive Branch of our government quickly and far sightedly opened a separate account calls Ebola Trust Fund which all cash donations are sends to for proper management purpose. Why we were soliciting funding and directing it to this account, the virus quickly enters and makes Montserrado County another epicenter with electoral District#2 being of no exception. According to report received from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as a way of combating this virus in Montserrado County, the following amounts were released to the County Authority: 1. The amount of US$2,390.00 was given as a means of empowering the County Ebola Task Force Team which was spearheaded by the county Superintendent. 2. The amount of LR$551,648.00 was also released to the county authority from the country Ebola Trust Fund under the watchful eyes of both the Superintendent and the County legislative caucus for the establishment of District Task Forces. 3. The amount of US$276,500 was finally released from the cover of the Montserrado County Social Development Fund on August 6, 2014 through a resolution that was signed by the County legislative caucus and endorsed by the Superintendent through a cover letter to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Considering that Montserrado County has seventeen representatives and two senators which sum up to nineteen electoral offices, for the purpose of equitable distribution, each electoral office was to receive the amount of LR$29,034.105 and US$14,552.632 as a mean of empowerment in the fight against this toxic disease. Painfully ladies and gentlemen of the press, Our Direct Representative in person of Rep. Sekou S. Kanneh, deliberately chose not to give us any clear understanding about the above disbursed amount rather to distrustfully and doubtfully pronounced to our district on Saturday, September 27, 2014 the amount of LR$500,000.00, two hundred pieces of buckets and nineteen cottons of tide soap which has the estimated cost of US$7,804.251 as the county contribution to us as a district in the fight against this disease; with a balance of US$6,748.251 and LR$29,034.105 which we our lawmaker is yet to give full account of. What remains more unsetting and disturbing about his pronouncement is his inability to clearly explain to the people of District#2 the original source of the cash pronounced by him, the amount received in total by the County Authority which he is a part and the yardstick used during the distribution process that led to our district receiving said amount in cash and goods as was pronounced by him. Sadly, when asked by the above organization about this in a written communication dated October 3, 2014 and knowing the unfairness associated with the cash received and also being part of a group that believes in dishonesty, exploitation and gluttonization, the lawmaker chose not to further explain beyond what he has pronounced to the district and said to us through his Special Assistant, Mr. Ishmael Ansu Kromah, that he’s not accountable to us on this issue rather the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the office of the Superintendent. A verbal respond we believe can only come from the belly of a fundamentally indolent and fragmented element with despicable and pocket-size understanding about the responsibilities associated with that honorable office. This miscalculated and undervalue respond from the office of our lawmaker sent a signal to our minds that unfair, insincere and corrupt practices have cover the mind of our direct representative at the national legislature and that he has lost his focus and does not know the full meaning of representation which goes with transparency and accountability. Finally ladies and gentlemen of the press, we are using this medium to inform the people of district#2 about the above shady and fraudulent deal that our representative is involve with including his ability to adequately represent his personal interest and his inability to continuously and adequately represent us at the level of the national legislature. Long live United Youth For Positive Action, Long live the people of District#2 and let God bless Liberia. Signed: ______________________________ Sam M.
