Previous research has shown that Wolbachia -- a genus of bacteria that live inside mosquitoes -- render mosquitoes resistant to Dengue virus infection and malaria. This means that the mosquitoes, devoid of those pathogens, can no longer transmit these diseases to humans. However, new research from Penn State is emerging that shows that Wolbachia-laden mosquitoes are not immune to contracting West Nile virus. In fact, West Nile virus replicated faster in such mosquitoes than in controls.
