Pricing has been announced on the new 2014 BMW X5, starting at $53,725. The new X5 sDrive35i is the base model and the first X5 to feature a rear-wheel drive drivetrain. BMW will offer a variety of engine choices, including a turbocharged inline-six, V8, and later a diesel option. The standard 3.0L inline-six is available in either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, with 300 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft of torque. Peak torque is available from 1,200-1,500 rpm due to BMWs development of the motor, which includes direct injection, variable valve timing, and a twin scroll turbocharger. The highest-spec BMW X5 xDrive 50i, powered by a 4.4L V8, will start at $69,125. The engine has two turbochargers mounted in the valley between the cylinder banks, sharpening throttle response. Power figures from the engine are 445 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft of torque, a healthy increase over the previous model. A new diesel option will be made available several months after the gasoline versions, and will cost $4,000 more than the base model. With 255 horsepower and 413 lb.-ft of torque, the output of the new diesel is slightly lower than the previous, but efficiency is higher and performance remains the same. The diesel uses the newest technology available for clean diesels, such as common rail direct injection and urea injection to reduce emissions. All trim levels of the new X5 will feature the BMW eight-speed transmission, with a plethora of optional extras. Optional technology includes a stop/start system, electronically assisted coasting, and an advanced traffic mode. Traffic Jam Assist combines uses adaptive cruise control to follow the car in front with a lane sensor to keep the X5 in its lane. Other technology includes parking assist cameras, blind spot detection, a Speed Limit Info feature, real time traffic, and even an iPhone BMW App. Having only scratched the surface of the features of the new X5, it is safe to assume that BMW has created one of the most technologically advanced cars on the market. The X5 will be in showrooms towards the end of the year, with diesel models expected to be on sale in early 2014.
