Prima Terra Plasters – Word of the Day CALCITE ‘Calcite’ is the mineralogist’s designation for the most common and stable crystallized form of calcium carbonate, CaCO3. Calcium is actually a metal and ‘calcite’ is considered a metallic salt of calcium. Most sedimentary limestone that is used for stone masonry and lime production comes from the skeletal and shell remains of ancient marine organisms (plankton, bivalves, coral etc.) that converted calcium ions in seawater into calcite.
