Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the eighth anniversary of the Red Friday Campaign launch in Canada: “Lisa Miller and Karen Boire launched the Red Friday Campaign nationally with a rally on Parliament Hill in 2006. They had a simple goal: to pay tribute to the courageous members of the Canadian Armed Forces who risk their lives to create a safer and more secure world. Since the Red Friday movement’s inception, many Canadians from coast to coast to coast have worn red on Fridays to support our brave men and women in uniform. “The Canadian Armed Forces play an important role in protecting Canada, defending North America, and contributing to international peace and security by serving throughout the world. By wearing red every Friday, we are showing our troops and their families the respect and gratitude they deserve for their tremendous sacrifices. “This year’s anniversary is especially significant given that May 9, 2014, has been declared a “National Day of Honour” by Royal Proclamation. The National Day of Honour commemorates the service and sacrifice of the members of the Canadian Armed Forces and employees of the Public Service of Canada who served in Afghanistan. It also provides an opportunity to thank family members, friends and all Canadians for their tremendous support. Finally, the day recognizes the enormous sacrifices made by the Families of the Fallen. “I encourage all Canadians to continue the proud tradition of wearing red on Fridays as a gesture of respect and honour to support the men and women who bravely serve our country.”
